Class Description: The Blues Partnership

Our Foundations level series help students quickly build confidence in their dancing by developing a solid base of vocabulary and technique. We teach leaders and followers a large repertoire of fun partnered moves that will allow students to enjoy dancing in a social setting right away. We give students opportunities to combine these moves together on their own, and practice changing the rhythm of their steps. By the end of the series, students can improvise in the spirit of the blues.

In The Blues Partnership, we will go into depth on how to move in unison within the blues partnership. The movements we will cover create a feeling that the partners form a single entity that moves as one. Leaders and followers will learn to detect their partner’s movement directly through the embrace rather than visually. In addition to the basics, we’ll cover moves in promenade, as well as how to dance in the more intimate close embrace position.

Specific material we’ll cover in this series include:

  • Weight transfers, side to side and in-place
  • Connection in open and closed positions
  • Rhythm: quick vs slow
  • In-place turns for leaders and followers
  • The cross body lead (+ variations on this theme)
  • The tuck turn
  • Close embrace (removing the space between partners)
  • The lunge
  • Sit dip (no space between partners)
  • Promenade entrances and exits
  • The “hallelujah”

No previous experience is necessary and no partner is required in order to join this series.
